Fabulous Fall Fashion Trends Of 2014

By Alexia Gonzalez on September 4, 2014

The welcoming of the autumnal season is indicative of some of my favorite aspects of the year, such as cooler weather, changing foliage (depending what state you reside in), pumpkin flavored treats, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and oh yeah, not to mention … boots and scarves.

I hate to generalize, but what girl doesn’t highly anticipate walking to class in her brand new pair of booties, clutching a pumpkin spiced latte and sporting her favorite cozy cardigan? I for one, certainly do.

Although fall is notorious for its fashion staples including the aforementioned boot-wear, black leggings, and chunky sweaters, the times certainly are changing–much like the leaves–to usher in a new era of warm style.

So don’t get left behind in the cold and make sure to keep up with the fashion trends for the upcoming fall season.

Colors of the Wind

According to the runways, fall 2014 is bringing some unexpectedly bold colors into our closets to accent the usual darker shades of the season–think deep burgundies or purple tones paired with caramel and light gray hues, Channel royalty in pops of bright sapphire blue and emerald green.

Make your look stand out with hints of metallic silver and shimmery gold through accessories and layering.

Go from campus to metropolis by pairing burgundy skinnies with a caramel knit sweater, a slicked back ponytail and pointy heels for a look that will have you feeling like a true city slicker.

Wild Child

You don’t have to travel far to find yourself close to the safari this year. Fall will be all about wild animal prints manifesting themselves throughout your wardrobe.

Pants, blouses, purses and shoes adding a dash of leopard spots or tiger stripes will make you stand out like the fiercest lioness in the jungle. Try simple animal print accents in small doses, such as a belt or skirt with surrounding black or white solid colored layers. Remember, a little usually goes a long way.

Texturize

This season is taking mixed textures to a whole new level. Step out of your cotton comfort zone and enter a world of heavy knits, leather, and silk, to name a few. Don’t hesitate to layer on these different fabrics to ignite a look that’s fearlessly trendy.

Knitty-Witty

Knit sweaters and jackets are a must this season. These pieces are perfect for any occasion bearing that chilly fall breeze.

Pair a speckled knit pullover with ripped denim, ankle boots, and a crocheted beanie for an effortlessly street-chic vibe. If you’re feeling really daring, try an oversized knit turtleneck to really dramatize your look.

Leather Forever

Leather is a timeless fall and winter staple suitable for any style and body type.

However, this year is becoming somewhat of a leather renaissance. Fashion magazines and celebrities have been showcasing everything from leather blouses, leather skirts, and leather jackets to all over leather-on-leather looks.

This material can take your outfit anywhere from punk-rock glam to sophisticated party-goer.

Fur-get Me Not

Faux-Fur is definitely making a comeback for fall 2014. I must admit, this can be a pretty intimidating type of fabric for most ladies. But fear not fashionistas, you too can make a fur statement!

Be it fur trim, fur collar, or even a fur vest, the looks of the fall make it easy for you to find the best way to fit faux-fur into a funky and wearable outfit.

Revenge of the Velvet

Velvet is another fabric from the past that seems to be popping up all over the runways this season.

Although velvet is usually connoted with tacky bows and puffy sleeves from the ’80s, this velvet revenge is bringing back jackets, hats, dresses, shoes, pants–you name it–all donning the plush fabric.

Shock and awe in this underestimated fabric and transform your look from classroom to happy hour with a velvet skater skirt and a cropped knit sweatshirt (add black tights or over the knee socks for an edgier twist).

**Don’t be afraid to mix and match textures and colors, but always remain conscientious of using only one statement piece in combination with more subdued fabrics and hues in order to avoid looking over done.

Schoolgirl Chic

Although it’s always safe to leave plaid behind with your grade school uniform, this classic pattern is back with a vengeance as it reappears all over the hottest fall fashion collections.

Style any little black dress or simple black leggings and V-neck with an eye-catching plaid oversized coat.

Don’t fear your middle school prep-kid attire! Collared shirts, button ups, and blazers can be used for any occasion to create a clean-cut yet trendy impression. Layer a collared shirt under a plaid blazer for a refined and intellectual approach.

Ladies, snagging straight off the runway looks doesn’t mean breaking into your savings account. Take a dive into your closet and see what pieces from past seasons can be recycled into an entirely new wardrobe.

Vamp up your favorite leather jacket with a faux-fur trim or vest and find that crochet top that you totally forgot that your grandma made you for your 16th birthday.

Shop smart for trendy pieces at stores such as TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, and Forever 21 where you can find the perfect add-ons to take your plain black knit sweater from the bottom of the hamper to the top of your wardrobe!
