"Friends" And More Are Coming To Netflix January 2015

By Elana Goodwin on December 27, 2014

January is sure to be your month and 2015 definitely will be your year. Why? Because Netflix will be adding the entire “Friends” series (among other titles) to their streaming service on January 1, 2015.

That’s right; the beloved classic that aired on NBC from 1994-2004 and gave us Ross and Rachel, Chandler and Monica, and Phoebe and Joey will be available for your viewing and binge-watching pleasure on New Year’s Day. Watching and re-watching 10 seasons of “Friends” just may be the most important resolution you put on your list for 2015 and one that you actually start doing right away.

But “Friends” isn’t the only addition Netflix will be offering in January. Here are some of the movies which will be available for streaming as the new year begins.

“Mean Girls.” The classic 2004 teen comedy about popularity and cliques starring Lindsay Lohan and written by Tina Fey will be coming to Netflix on January 1. The film also stars Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert and gave us such quotable gems, like “On Wednesdays we wear pink;” “‘On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was;’ ‘It’s October 3rd;’” and “Four for you, Glenn Coco. You go Glenn Coco.”

Basically, “Mean Girls” coming to Netflix is totally fetch.

“101 Dalmatians.” The Golden Globe-nominated 1996 film starring Glenn Close as Cruella De Vil will bring you back to your childhood. The Dalmatian parents and various other animals team up against Cruella to save the 99 puppies she’s going to use to make herself a coat in this adventure-comedy. So if you’re feeling nostalgic, you can now stream this adolescent favorite on Netflix in January.

“The French Connection.” The 1971 film that won five Oscars — including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Director — about two New York City cops in the Narcotics unit who come across a drug smuggling job with a French connection (hence the name), is coming to Netflix on January 1.

The movie stars Gene Hackman, Fernando Rey and Roy Scheider, and is one oldie but goodie you should definitely watch.

“Cast Away.” The Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated 2000 film starring Tom Hanks as a FedEx employee who crashes onto a deserted island and must learn to survive is an absolute must-see or must-see-again.

Plus seeing Hanks talking to Wilson the volleyball and struggling to stay alive and sane will make you appreciate the fact that you’re cozy in your home and your only worry is what you’ll watch next on Netflix.

“Bruce Almighty.” Morgan Freeman as God? Yeah, I’d watch that again. The 2003 Jim Carrey comedy about a guy who complains a lot and is given God’s powers to teach him a lesson is a great film to re-watch when you’re in the mood for an easy laugh and this January, thanks to Netflix, you can.

“Election.” The Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated 1999 dramedy starring Reese Witherspoon as Tracy Flick who’s running for school president and Matthew Broderick as the teacher who has it out for her is one you’ll definitely want to stream.

“Election” will bring you back to your high school days and make you glad you’re in college where all that drama and chaos is really a thing of the past — but fun to watch in a movie.

Netflix will also stream “Bad Boys II,” “Wayne’s World 2,” “Shall We Dance?” and more along with their other new additions.

However, while Netflix is welcoming a ton of good movies and awesome TV shows, they’ll also be removing various titles which expire from streaming on January 1, 2015. The Kate Winslet-Leonardo DiCaprio classic “Titanic;” the star-studded holiday favorite “Love Actually;” and the renowned 1998 Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks film “You’ve Got Mail” are just some of the movies that will no longer be on Netflix come January.

Also expiring is high school dramedy “The Breakfast Club;” the Jennifer Lopez-Matthew McConaughey rom-com “The Wedding Planner;” the coming-of-age comedy “My Girl;” the double Lindsay Lohan-starring “The Parent Trap,” and more, so a movie marathon to watch all these great movies before they are no longer on Netflix is definitely in order.

But even though some great movies will no longer be available on the streaming service, Netflix will be there for you (cue the dancing in a fountain “Friends” montage) in a big way in January. Because as long as “Friends” is on Netflix, it’ll always be your day, your week, your month and your year.
