17 Reasons Why My Best Friend from High School Will Never Be Replaced

By Frankie Rabas on March 6, 2016

When you go off to college, you meet tons of new people within the first few weeks. You find out who’s true friend material, and who may be a good study buddy or acquaintance. Through adjusting to your new life, you find yourself missing your best friend from high school. How could you not? You guys spent every moment of your last summer together staying up late, watching movies, doing facials together, and giggling about boys until your mom demanded you turn off the lights at 4am. You find new friends at college, ones that will last a lifetime, but you know that your true BFF from high school could never truly be replaced. Here are 17 reasons why she will always live in your heart.

1. She knows you better than anyone
She knows exactly what time you go to bed (so it’s pointless for her to ask if you want to FaceTime after 11:30 anyway), she knows your McDonald’s order by heart, if you like whipped cream on your venti white chocolate mocha with skim milk, and exactly how many boys you’ve made out with. She knows your birthday by heart and is always the first one to post on your Facebook wall at midnight, and the one who knows when you text “oh my lord guess what just happened”, she’ll know your ex-boyfriend tried to play the “I miss you” card.

2. She’s always there for you
Whether you’re freaking out about your Chem exam which is worth 100 points, the fact that you got scheduled a double shift at your on-campus job, or the existential crisis you’re going through because the cute guy never texted you after you met for coffee, she knows exactly what to say to get you through it. “You’re the smartest b*tch I know, calm down”, “Just take a breath, you got this”, or “if he can’t even take 2 seconds to text you, he’s not worth your time, babe”, she helps you through all your hardships.

3. You hate the same people
Maybe the slut you both hated in high school got a horrible haircut or the disgusting couple you hated broke up. Whatever it is, you can both share a silent victory when karma comes around to the people you mutually disliked in high school. You can always count on your girl to send you screen shots of Facebook fights or to text you in all caps about *INSERT GIRL YOU HATE* AND *INSERT GUY YOU HATE* BROKE UP OMG BEST DAY OF MY LIFEEE.

4. You’ve been through it all
You’ve been through awkward middle school phases together, your first high school Homecoming, playing in band together, bad haircuts, douche-y boyfriends, road trips, countless sleepovers, Prom, shopping expeditions, and so much more. Your friendship is too valuable to toss away and you know that you could never forget those precious memories with your best friend. You guys are what made each others teenage years the best; you helped each other survive all your crazy adventures, and nothing could ever replace that.

5. You’ve already planned your futures together
Of course you’ve already planned your futures together, where your children have names that rhyme, your husbands are hot twin brothers, and you’ll live in the same neighborhood so you’re not too far apart. Then when you’re little old ladies, you’ll move into the same retirement home together and chase each other around in your electric scooters, fighting over who gets the TV remote.

6. You’re each others rebounds if you’re still single at 40
Unless of course Plan A fails, you’ve promised each other that you’ll just move in together if you’re not married by 40 and continue being the fabulous queens you are for the rest of your life. You will also have a kingdom of cats that will love and adore you.

7. Your inside jokes are invaluable
No one, and I mean no one, could ever adapt to the hilarious inside jokes you and your best friend share. Who else would double over laughing at the word “vanilla pudding” because one time she laughed so hard it came out of her nose and she looked like a snot monster? Or who else would understand your pointed expression when someone with mom jeans walks by because it reminds you of the girl in high school who only wore baggy jeans? That’s right, no one.

8. Her mom would miss you
You were over at her house so often, her mom knew what you liked for dinner. She knew that you preferred ice cream for dessert over cookies so she would make sure to keep some in the freezer for when you came over for dinner during the week (which was pretty often).

9. Your mom would miss her
It’s a two-way street here; your mom knew exactly what snacks to buy if your girl was staying over for the weekend, and was genuinely surprised when both of you didn’t come trudging loudly in the house after school on Friday’s, an overnight bag in her hand.

10. No one gets you quite the way she does
You know you can text one single word to her and she’ll know what it means. “HALP. SOS” commonly means that your crazy ex is trying to reach out to you again. The eye roll emoji means your mom is on your back about your grades again, and if you texted her “IM LITERALLY CRYING” she knew you just saw the newest photo of Harry Styles at the Billboard Awards after party looking hella fine. She knows you better than anyone, and in a way no one else really does.

11. She knows too many secrets
She knows your embarrassing secret about kissing that nerdy weirdo when you got a little too tipsy at a bonfire last summer. She knows that you still sometimes sleep with your baby blanket and keep stuffed animals on your bed because they “ward off demons”. Your best friend knows your deepest darkest secrets and she’s the best keeper too.

12. You’re forever in each others debt
You know you still owe her from the time she paid for your DQ blizzard, but it’s evened out from when you paid for that shirt she just HAD to have at the mall, right? But then there was that one time she paid for your popcorn at the movie… and then you paid for her deodorant because she forgot her wallet in the car. Did she ever pay you back for that time you paid for her admission to the carnival? Did you ever pay her back for those sandals at forever21? You will always be in each others debt; therefore, you are friends forever. Case closed.

13. She gives the best advice
You know you shouldn’t give your boyfriend a second chance but you just can’t resist forgiving him again. She is the one who firmly stands in front of you, puts her hands on your shoulders, and talks some gosh darn sense into your teenage-infatuated mind. She watches out for you, takes care of you, and makes sure you don’t do anything stupid. The last thing she wants to see is for you to get hurt, so not only is she your best friend, but your protector as well.

14. You know you can always call her
Whether it’s 8pm or 3 in the morning, if you’re having boy trouble, school trouble, parent trouble, or just need a shoulder to cry on, you know you can call her and she’ll answer. She’ll rub her eyes, sound extremely annoyed for waking her up, but in the end, she’ll be there for you and let you get your feelings out.

15. You miss her like crazy
You’ve literally spent the last what, four, six, eight, ten years of your life together and now you’re at separate colleges? She’s basically your sister and getting used to being away from her is a real challenge. You can’t run to her every time you have something to tell her; you have to pick up your phone and text it to her. And if she’s in class, she’s not going to respond for another hour or few. You sometimes have to wait three or more months to see her again and honestly, it’s really hard. You miss her so much but you know that when you’re reunited, you’ll pick up right where you left off.

16. You’re there for her the same way she is for you
Whether she’s having a crisis, having an awesome day, having the worst day, or she just wants to talk, you’re always there to listen. You love her just as much as she loves you and you take care of each other. You return all the amazing ways she cares for you even through a long distance friendship.

17. Always together, never apart, maybe in distance but never at heart
You’re apart at different colleges, but you’re always in each others thoughts. Between the funniest thing happening in class yesterday to seeing something that reminds you of her, you text her immediately and she finds it just as funny as you do. You support each other in all your accomplishments in your new lives and promise to FaceTime at least once a week. You’re both leading new lives and experiencing new things, but one thing will never change: you’ll always be in each others minds and hearts.
